Bolivar Cuban cigars were introduced in 1901 by the Rocha
Company of Havana. They are named after Simon Bolivar, one of the great romantic
figures of the 19th century, who liberated much of South America from oppresive
Spanish rule. Although a large range of Bolivar cigars is handmade, there are
also some machine-made versions available.
The flavour of the reasonably priced handmade Bolivar Cuban cigars
is full, and are not recommended for the novice cigar smoker. However, the machine-bunched
range is not so strong in flavour and is therefore more suitable.
At one time, the Rocha Cigar company produced the world's smallest Cuban cigar,
the Delgado, measuring only 1 7/ 8 inches by 20 ring gauge.
There is also a separate range of Bolivar cigars are made in the Dominican
Republic that bear no resemblance to the flavour of the Bolivar Cuban
cigars.
