The Cohiba Cuban cigars were created in 1966 as Havana's premier
Cuban cigar brand,
for diplomatic use only. The story goes that Castro's bodyguard had a private
supply of cigars which he purchased from a local tobacquero. Castro enjoyed
the taste so much that he secretly installed their maker, Eduardo Ribera, in
a Havana mansion, so that he could make them exclusively for the government.
From 1982, Cohiba Cuban cigars were offered to the general
public in three sizes: Lancero, Corona Especiale and Panetela. Three more sizes
were added in 1989 - Esplendido, Robusto and Exquisito - to complete La Linea
Clasica. Then in 1992, five sizes of La Linea 1492 were announced: Siglo I,
II, III, IV and V. The flavour of La Linea Clasica is medium to full, while
La Linea 1492 is medium.
Extra care is taken to colour-match each box of Cohiba Cuban cigars.
They are graded into no less than 80 shades, with a predominance of light to
mid-claro tones, and some of the golden colorado hue.
A range of Cohiba cigars made in the Dominican Republic should not be confused
with the superb Havana cigars made at the Partagas
factory.
