BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE SOIL FOR CIGAR PLANTATION IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES
CUBA
The Vuelta Abajo produces the best tobacco of the island. Cuba produces the best tobacco of the world.
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
A huge part of the production is dedicated to the United States. The Dominican cigars are usually very light-bodied and mild, thus they meet the American taste. We must say that some brands from Dominican Republic are missing some originality. However, a small part of the Dominican production is really interesting and worth watching: For example, Juan Clemente is making some outstanding cigars.
HONDURAS
They are generous, round in taste, interesting... The Honduran cigars are particular and will definitely please the beginner as well as the expert, even the Havana aficionados. Today, the Honduras is trying its best to bring something new and dynamic on the market.
NICARAGUA
Here is another promising country. Like the Honduras, the Nicaragua is producing an excellent tobacco, very typical in taste and aromas. This country is developing its own identity in cigars, and offering exciting new sensations. Tobacco delivers often hints of dead leaves and meat.
MEXICO
Country whose aficionados tend to forget that the tradition of making cigars started thousands of years ago. Mexico does produce true puros. The available brands show great aromatic diversity. The Mexican cigar is a dynamic product.
UNITED STATES
The tobacco grown in the United States is for the local market. Connecticut is producing some of the finest tobacco leaves in the world (only wrapper leaves), used mainly for foreign cigars.
JAMAICA
Another production dedicated to the American market.
BRAZIL, INDONESIA, PHILIPPINES
These countries are making cigars with different standards of what the common aficionado could want. Brazil, Indonesia and Philippines' modest cigars are drier and acrid. They conform to German, Dutch and Austrian taste, but are completely different cigars than what some of us would expect.
PERU
Rather exotic place to grow tobacco, isn't it? Especially if this tobacco is dedicated to the American market. Nevertheless, Peruvian tobacco has been introduced in the liga of a few brands (including the Zino Platinum) much for marketing matters (exotic origin) instead of the qualities of the tobacco. This production remains modest and anecdotal.
VENEZUELA ET PARAGUAY
These countries are producing tobacco and making cigars, however, Venezuela and Paraguay vitolas are still unknown from aficionados (and not imported yet in most countries). Both Venezuela and Paraguay do produce cigars (certainly modest and rather rustic) which offers typical aromas.
