Moments to carry out fermentation of dark tobacco in Cuba.

Dark tobacco requires an effort that transform the original raw material in an elite product, that is why fermentation is verified in different moments and with different techniques according to the behavior of the chemical substances of the leaves. It is not possible to talk about the fermentation of dark tobacco without mentioning aging.

The main moments to carry out fermentation are the following:

a) In pylons, in the curing barn
b) During the selection (in the sorting house).
c) When stripping.
d) Aging (to see later on)
e) In any other moment that be considered necessary.

a - The fermentation in pylons was already approached previously, it is necessary to point out that as this fermentation is the first step in this process its effects will be appreciated in all moments, for what should be avoided that tobacco ferment under 30 degrees or over 35.

b - During the sorting process tobacco is fermented in some special pylons that receive the name of tobacco piles, this fermentation is carried out in tobaccos of high chemical composition, that is to say central and superior leaves of the plants. In tobacco for wrappers in occasions in the sorting process the leaves receive a slight fermentation in order to standardize the chemical composition and to transform some substances that could not be transformed during the ulterior aging process.

c - In the stripping house according to the chemical composition of the leaf and if they are for filler or binder, fermentations are carried out in the following moments:

- Before the stripping process. This fermentation is carried out after having taken out tobacco from the bales, it is moistened, humidity is standardized and the pylons are made (tobacco piles). This fermentation is not carried out in the leaves for binder, but for filler.

- After the stripping process. After fillers and binders have been stripped they can be fermented in two different ways, in the tobacco piles and in barrels
