H. Upmann Cuban cigars, a great favorite among cigar aficionados,
have a very smooth and subtle flavor that has been its trademark since its introduction
in 1844. The initial success of this brand was buoyed by the seven gold medals
awarded in seven international exhibitions between 1862 and 1893. These awards
still adorn the lithographed interior of the cigar box today.
Characteristically, H. Upmann Cuban cigars are mild to medium-bodied
cigars that are ideal for the beginner’s palate, but also appeal to the
day-time tastes of seasoned cigar connoisseurs. Their larger sizes are among
the most coveted and sought after cigars in the world.
Originally a banker, Herman Upmann became so fond of the cigars that were sent
to him from Cuba, that he moved to Havana in 1844. There he continued banking
and set up as a cigar-maker. The cigar company was taken over by Frankau &
Company in 1922. A further change of ownership came about in the mid-1930s,
when it was purchased by the company of Menendez y Garcia.
Each box of H. Upmann cigars still carries the signature of Herman Upmann.
